Month 3 - Superman: Red Son

Wow, what an ending!  Now, let's get down to business and ask some important questions:

  1. Considering the ending, was Superman good or evil?  Do you think he actually remembered why he was sent back, or do you feel that events played out naturally? (nature vs. nurture)
  2. Similarly, was Lex Luthor good or evil?  Was he only doing things for selfish reasons, or for the benefit of mankind?  Both?
  3. How many references to the regular Superman and DC mythos can you find hidden throughout the book?
  4. How do the characters in the book compare to their normal versions? Are their motivations and beliefs the same?
  5. The events of the story are set on a backdrop including actual historical figures.  How did Superman's existence change the world in less obvious ways?
  6.  Many, many superhero graphic novels ask the reader if the world is better off without them. Using this graphic novel's take, should the world even have superheroes?
  7. How do Lex Luthor's actions mirror those of current world politicians? Luthor uses a means to an end-type approach.
  8. Even though Superman and Batman are both members of the Justice League and are meant to be good friends, they are often written as opposing forces.  What do you think of this dynamic relationship?
  9. Lois Lane, Lana Lang, and Wonder Woman are all presented as ignored or abused by the men in their life.  What do you think about their different reactions to this treatment?
  10. Batman's hat- yes or no?
