What is Graphic Content?

Graphic Content is a library discussion group and blog started by Paisley Gray (that's me!) during the summer of 2011.  We meet once a month to discuss a graphic novel which has been provided by the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library.  Meanwhile, I maintain this blog with updates, comics news, and reviews of the graphic novels and comics I read.

The main goal of Graphic Content is to educate newcomers to comics and graphic novels about the variety, depth, and strengths of the medium.  (Read more about this in the "Why a Graphic Novel Club?" section.)

We meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Civic League Room of the library.  I provide a sheet of guided questions for us to go over, and from there, we just sort of let the discussion take its course (with plenty of side detours, of course).  The age restrictions are teens and adults aged 15 and up, due to some of the adult content featured in the books.  Never fear, however, if you are under 15 or have a younger child; in my graphic novel recommendation list, I have marked books with maturity levels, including one specifically for kids.  We have a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, and what's more, if you attend regularly throughout a year's session, you may choose one book to keep!

I love running the club, and I love having new people!  Don't worry about not having any background or previous knowledge about comics or especially superheroes.  Each book picked for the club is specifically chosen to be instantly accessible to newbies.  No background info required.  Some heroes, like Batman or Spider-man, are so ingrained into our cultural consciousness, that I bet you know far more than you even realize!  So, if you are interested in joining our little group, you can either show up at one of our meetings or you can come into the library at any time of the month, mosey on down to the children's library where I operate, and ask me or anyone else working for a copy of the book to be discussed at the next meeting.  Easy as pie!  And you'll impress by being the new guy who knows what they're talking about.  ;)

Hope to see you there!
