Questions - Silver Surfer: Requiem

Man, what a tearjerker!  This month's book, Silver Surfer: Requiem, studies the true invincibility of a superhero.  Read on for this month's discussion questions!

1) Silver Surfer is a character that isn't often used in the contemporary Marvel universe.  Why do you think that is?

2)  How do you feel about Galactus?  Is he evil, or merely neutral, like a force of nature?

3) Two themes prevalent in the Silver Surfer's back story are his separation from his lost love and his disdain at the violence native to his adopted home.  As far as last acts go, how well do you think he dealt with the issues during the story?

4)  SS's interaction with Spiderman was a study in opposite personalities, yet they share the same goals and "occupation".  If one thing were present in all superheroes which caused them to choose their lifestyle, what do you think it would be?

5) SS's death is more representative of dying of cancer or AIDS in humanity, as opposed to the shoot-out or heroic sacrifice more common in superhero deaths.  Does this make his death harder to swallow?

6) On his journey home, SS puts an end to a pointless war, which had continued due to complacity and greed on the parts of the leaders of the two respective races involved.  This is obviously meant to parody war on Earth, but do you think that the comparison is too simplified?  Are the reasons behind war really like this?

7) The Marvel superhero community as a whole, but particularly the Fantstic Four, act as a surrogate family to SS once he relocated to Earth, and rally around him once they discover his illness.  What sort of comraderie do you think would be unique to superheroes?

8) It's strange to think that in a world with as many superheroes as Marvel, that everyday problems such as war and petty injustice would still be problematic.  Assuming that a hero did not seize full contol ( à la Superman: Red Son), what fundamental differences in day-to-day life do you think their existence would contribute?

9) Do you think that the power and experiences he gained by becoming the herald of Galactus balance his loss?

10) Even after his explanation, do you think the whole surfboard thing is still a bit goofy?
