Questions: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Ah, finally, we will be able to discuss this book!  And what a marvelous concept, especially for fans of classic literature!  But for those who feared that antiquated English fiction would bore you, hopefully you have by now discovered that this is no dry, dusty tome.  Onward, to the questions!

1) Have any of you read these characters in their original incarnations?  How does the original compare with this adaptation?

2) How did you feel about the format of the book, how it is set up to appear as if it were being released as a serialized story in the very time period it depicts?  Did you enjoy the bonus material at the end?

3) Who is your favorite member of the League?

4) It is unusual that a female is chosen to be leader of any super-group, even in modern day.  How do you feel about Mina Murray?  Why do you think she was chosen to lead the League?

5) Do you think James Moriarty perished after the sky battle?

6) Do you think the story is more of an homage to the Victorian era or a satire poking fun at it?

7) The story reveals deep flaws in the character of almost every member of the team, and yet they agree to continue working together.  Quatermain is an opium addict, Hyde is a monster, Jekyll is a coward, Griffin is a rapist, and Nemo has an unquenchable blood lust.  But at heart, are  they good men?  How do you think things will unfold for the League as they continue their work?

8) How do you feel the art compliments the story?

9) Pick one character from classic literature that you would have liked to have seen added to the team.  (It doesn't necessarily have to be from the exact same time period as long as it isn't too far fetched.)

10) Now, we shall build our own League.  Pick one character from modern fiction (books, t.v., comics, and video games are all allowable) that you would like to see team up to save the world.  The character must be able to exist in our era (Example: I would like to pick Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, but he only exists in the future.  Therefore, I must make another choice.)
